Of Presidents, Musicians, Presidents, Leaders & Heroes

Vantage Points Header Joel Elveson

The highway’s jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive”

          –Born To Run-Bruce Springsteen.

We can be Heroes, just for one day”

          –Heroes David Bowie.

Heads Down. Stay Down”

          –Captain (pilot) Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger.

The most terrifying words in the English language are I’m from the government and I am here to help”

          –Former President Ronald Regan.

Every nation in every region now has a decision to make. Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists”

          –Former President George W. Bush.

In the end, we will remember the words not of our enemies, but the silence of our friends”

          –Martin Luther King Jr.

One cannot and must not try to erase the past merely because it does not fit the present”

          –Former Israeli Prime Minister-Golda Meir.

Of Former Presidents George W. Bush & Ronald W. Regan: Within hours of his swearing in then President Regan secured the unconditional and safe release of Americans who were being held captive in Iran. His two terms in office that started in 1980 were remembered and to some degree immortalized to this day despite the semi- unpopular “ reganomics” and the Iran-Contra Affair. Former President George W. Bush united this nation during our darkest hours, days, and months following the 09/11 attacks on the Twin Towers of The World Trade Center in New York City.

Martin Luther King Jr. the slain civil rights leader who left behind a legacy of non-violent fights for civil and against the war in Vietnam. Golda Meir the only woman Prime Minister of the State of Israel fervently devoted her life to the service of the Jewish State she helped found. Two shining examples of a what leadership looked like and should look like.

Bruce Springsteen and David Bowie (Bowie obviously being much lesser known) are musicians, singer song-writers who also devote much time to social causes as do many others in the music business. The early pioneers of mixing music wish social consciousness were Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs (to this day my favorite singer-songwriter) Joan Baez and others. In their own way they were leaders who fought for what they thought was right through the lyrics of their songs.

Chesley Sullenberger is a retired airline captain, aviation safety expert and accident investigator. Captain Sullenberger was hailed as national hero here in the United States when he successfully executed an emergency water landing after his aircraft became disabled by a striking flock of birds. All of the 155 passengers survived. Through his modesty we was a leader.

What is that a hero is defined of? Is it their actions or perhaps something else? Who decides who is a hero? Can any of the people mentioned above be considered heroes? Can heroes no matter who they are inspire the rest of us to reach for greater heights or teach us how look beyond who we are now to see what we can become?

Leaders are written about all the time be it for their style, failures, successors along with the litmus tests that they must be pass will ultimately define their time. Leaders lead one way or another and achieve or not achieve a goal or perhaps a mission on a battlefield they skillfully help their troops carry out. Heroes and leaders can be intertwined into one at any moment.

The President of the United States is the leader of the greatest nation on this planet. Yet as past and present history will bear out where at times corrupt (Nixon & Obama) dubbed incompetent (Bush until 9/11), Jimmy Carter (energy crises & hostage crises) and so on. Some became immortalized (Bush & Regan) after they left office. Other are remembered for the shame and dishonor they gave to this country (Clinton for his affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky) to themselves or to the harm they are causing our country or by the disrespect they show for it and our allies. That is the current and future legacy President Obama will leave behind. He is and will be remembered as the worst President this country has ever had.

Of heroes we need more. Of leaders there are and will be more in different aspects of life. Musicians can lift our spirts when we see them on stage or listen to their songs. Heroes they are not. Leaders they are not. In 2016 a new President will be elected. He or she (please don’t let another Clinton occupy the white House) will have their chance to lead. Can they turn into heroes by making America great again?

Who will lead their team to victory in baseballs World Series? Who will lead their team to victory in the Super Bowl in the National Football League? Who will lead their team to a championship in the National Basketball League, Who will lead their team to Stanley Cup Winners in the National Hockey League? Can any professional athlete who wins our adulation by virtue of the above be a real hero or just somebody who along with their teammates thrilled us with their breathtaking skills? I’ll let you answer this question.

  1. Brilliantly presented Joel. Thank you.

I am so blessed to have many a ‘ hero’ cross my life’s pathway, be it the beggar who smiled as I passed by, by giving more meaning to my day by allowing me to share just a little, or someone who helped others without thinking of self. Recognizing such
simple acts of kindness, experiencing the goodness of others, are all acts of heroism. It is true that some have had a great impact on others, on a nation etc..but the simple people who have made ‘sacrifices’ in everyday life are the true heros.

‘Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we
are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Gandhi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity.’

    Ricky Martin
